Key Facts

The first major interior refurbishment of Law Courts Building since its opening in 1977 was completed in April 2013. The building also required additional exterior remediation including concrete repairs, joint sealant, sealing holes on the façade, the sealing of galvanised steel rods and the removal of corroded fixings.

At the time, the Government (the property owners) spent a considerable sum in access and repair costs related to the exterior refurbishment, utilising a combination of cranes, mast climbers, swing stages and scaffolding. The original works were undertaken by a contractor who unfortunately did not meet the Australian standards expected. New rectification works had to be arranged. By the time they proceeded, five years had passed since the original work.

To reinstall the original mast climbers and scaffolding again would cost millions and cause unacceptable interruptions to both the building occupants and court proceedings. A less intrusive and more cost-effective solution was needed.

The only two possible solutions were swing stages and rope access. However, these two methods presented major safety risks and challenges. Specifically falling objects (especially rubble from concrete repairs) from a 140m high building into a busy pedestrian area.  Additionally, the extensive repairs required, some up to 5m in length, could not be safely carried out by conventional rope access. The façade design, with large concrete awnings jutting out from the main walls, did not allow appropriate access for tradesmen working off swing stages.

The main contractor Buildcorp approached CPR, knowing our proven track record carrying out similar major remedial works in high traffic areas with difficult shaped facades and roof structures. CPR were engaged and utilised our extensive remediation experience and capabilities to safely contain and capture all objects at heights with our patented SkyPod™ Catching Systems and the mechanical advantage of our Powered Elevator Access Rope Systems (PEARS™).

CPR developed and adapted new technology solutions for the project and completed the project ahead schedule and on budget.

Sydney Law Courts building is in the heart Sydney’s traditional legal precinct: Queen’s Square, at the corner of King and Macquarie Streets. It fronts a very busy pedestrian location due to the closure of the eastern tip of King Street between Phillip and Macquarie Streets to form a paved pedestrian concourse.

'In the light of CPR’s achievements on this challenging job, Buildcorp would not hesitate to either recommend or utilise CPR on future projects requiring safe height access and large scale remedial, engineering and painting works.'
